How HST is calculated
HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) combines the 5% federal GST with a provincial portion into one rate. To add tax, multiply the price by the rate. To remove tax from an all-in total, divide by (1 + rate). For example, an Ontario total of $113.00 ÷ 1.13 = $100.00 before tax, so the HST portion is $13.00.
In provinces without HST, GST and PST are calculated separately on the same pre-tax amount. Quebec's QST (9.975%) is also applied to the pre-tax price, not on top of GST.

Frequently asked questions
What is the HST rate in Ontario?
Ontario HST is 13%: 5% federal GST plus 8% provincial portion. It applies to most goods and services.
Which provinces use HST?
Ontario (13%), New Brunswick (15%), Newfoundland and Labrador (15%), Nova Scotia (14%), and Prince Edward Island (15%). Other provinces charge 5% GST plus, in BC, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec, a separate provincial sales tax.
How do I calculate HST on a price?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the rate. In Ontario: $100 × 0.13 = $13 HST, for a total of $113. To remove HST from a total, divide by 1.13.
Is HST charged on everything?
No. Basic groceries, prescription drugs, most medical devices, and residential rent are zero-rated or exempt. Some items in Ontario have point-of-sale rebates on the provincial portion, such as children's clothing and books.
